The coke machine is connected to the coke server via the parallel port. We've used the following very helpful documents and utilities:

• A good text on interfacing the parallel port
• Another text about using the parallel port on the PC
• A (MS-DOS) utility for detecting (amongst other things) if the parallel port is bidirectional
